Encyclia (Prosthechea) cochleata

Also known as the Octopus Orchid (or Clamshell or Cockleshell Orchid,) this genus has been renamed Prosthechea cochleata. It is a widely spread South and Central America epiphyte and it is known to be the first tropical orchid to flower at Kew Gardens, England, in 1787.
The gratifying qualities of this classic species are its unmistakable chocolate brown and green upside-down flowers and its long blooming season. A large specimen plant such as this one, growing in a 6.5″ (16.5 cm) pot blooms year-round on multiple spikes in my home. It could very well be the closest one can get to an everblooming orchid. Very easy to grow and great for beginners. Light peppery scent.
(Epi. cochleatum “Royal Knight” x Epi. cochleatum)
